What is a sound bath?
A sound bath is a meditative experience where attendees lie down or sit while a practitioner plays singing bowls, gongs, chimes, and other resonant instruments. The sound surrounds and envelops the body, often inducing deep relaxation and meditative states. Sessions typically run 60-90 minutes.
Why does the audio system matter for a sound bath?
Sound bath practitioners use specific frequencies and tonal resonances to produce the meditative effect. A standard Bluetooth speaker collapses the spatial dimension and loses low frequencies. The 17-speaker JBL system at LUME surrounds the room with audio from all directions, reproduces the full frequency range of live instruments and recorded sounds, and lets the practitioner work with the room as a single instrument. Attendees can close their eyes and lose track of where the sound is coming from.
What's the capacity for a sound bath?
Comfortable seating or lying capacity: 30-80 attendees in a circular or radial layout, 100+ in a row configuration. The Immersive Studio is the primary room for sound baths because the 14-foot ceilings and 360° audio surround create the ideal acoustic environment.
Can the visuals match the sound bath?
Yes. The 360° projection walls can run slow-moving ambient visuals, color fields, mandalas, or nature imagery synced to the audio. Many sound bath leaders use the visual layer to deepen the experience for guests with their eyes open.
Do you provide mats and props?
The space provides the room, lighting, audio system, and infrastructure. Mats and props are typically supplied by the sound bath leader or arranged with the host. We can connect operators with mat and prop partners if needed.
Can I host a recurring sound bath series?
Yes. Many sound bath leaders book LUME monthly or seasonally for a recurring series. Series and residency arrangements available.
How does LUME compare to typical sound bath venues?
Most NYC sound baths happen in yoga studios with hardwood floors, fluorescent lighting, and a Bluetooth speaker. LUME is purpose-built for experiential audio with 17 speakers in spatial array, ambient projection walls, and architectural volume that holds the resonance of the instruments.
